Knee Replacement Q & A

Why should you have your knee replacement surgery with Dr. Klement?

Dr. Klement specializes in knee replacement with rapid recovery protocols. He utilizes an “injection cocktail” during surgery to help minimize pain and swelling. Nerve blocks are also used to help minimize pain and get patients walking hours after the surgery is complete.

Dr. Klement performs the standard cemented knee replacement but also specializes in “cementless” knee replacement for younger, more active patients. Dr. Klement also closes his incisions, when possible, with sutures underneath the skin and surgical “glue” over the top. This avoids having to have staples or sutures removed at your postoperative visits to avoid patient discomfort.

What is a knee replacement?

A knee replacement is a surgical procedure that removes damaged portions of your knee and replaces them with prosthetic devices. The purpose of a knee replacement is to reduce knee pain and restore structure and mobility.

Dr. Klement is a board certified fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in knee replacement procedures. He uses the most advanced tools and techniques when possible, so you get the best results.

When is a knee replacement recommended?

Dr. Klement conducts a comprehensive evaluation when you come in with concerns about knee pain. He may recommend knee replacement if you have arthritis of the knee that causes:

  • Severe pain and stiffness when walking or climbing stairs
  • Moderate knee pain during rest
  • A deformity of the structure of your knee
  • Chronic knee inflammation

He may also recommend knee replacement surgery if medical treatments no longer provide pain relief.

People of all ages undergo knee replacement surgery. Dr. Klement determines the need for surgery based on the severity of your pain and disability.

What happens during a knee replacement?

Dr. Klement creates personalized surgical plans specific to your needs. He reviews what to expect during your knee replacement at your consultation.

Knee replacement surgery takes up to two hours. During your procedure, Dr. Klement makes an incision at your knee and inspects the joint to determine the severity of the damage. He then decides if he can perform a partial knee replacement or total knee replacement.

Dr. Klement removes the damaged cartilage and inserts the prosthetic pieces to restore alignment, movement, and structure.

After your knee replacement, he sends you to the recovery area for monitoring. When possible, he discharges you home the same day. If you need additional care and support, you may spend a night in the hospital following your knee replacement surgery.

What happens after a knee replacement?

After your knee replacement surgery, you may experience pain and stiffness. However, Dr. Klement prescribes physical therapy immediately following your surgery to alleviate pain and facilitate healing and mobility.

Physical therapy helps reduce pain and supports your recovery. You should be able to resume most of your usual activities within 4 to 6 weeks of your surgery, but full recovery may take 6 to 12 months.

With advances in surgical tools and techniques, knee replacement may be able to help you get back to your active lifestyle. Call Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin or schedule a consultation online today.
