Joint Injections Q & A

What are joint injections?

Joint injections are minimally invasive procedures that temporarily reduce joint pain and inflammation.

Dr. Klement may perform joint injections to diagnose the root cause of your joint pain, as well as reduce your discomfort.

What are the types of joint injections?

At Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, Dr. Klement offers steroid and viscosupplementation joint injections.

Steroid joint injections

Steroid joint injections contain a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and an anesthetic to decrease pain. Also known as cortisone injections, Dr. Klement performs these minimally invasive procedures to reduce knee and hip pain.

Viscosupplementation joint injections

Viscosupplementation joint injections contain hyaluronic acid, which is a gel-like substance naturally found in your body. The joint injection lubricates and cushions the joints to ease discomfort and improve mobility.

Dr. Klement performs viscosupplementation joint injections to alleviate arthritis pain in the knees.

Am I a candidate for joint injections?

When you visit Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin for a consultation, Dr. Klement performs an in-depth clinical exam to determine the best treatment for you.

You may be a good candidate for joint injections if you have hip or knee pain that fails to improve with conservative medical care, such as oral anti-inflammatories or physical therapy.

As noted, Dr. Klement may recommend joint injections to confirm or rule out the root cause of your knee or hip pain.

You may also benefit from joint injections to alleviate pain so you can participate in physical therapy.

What happens during joint injections?

Dr. Klement reviews the details of what to expect during your joint injections at your consultation. Generally, joint injections take less than an hour.

During your procedure, Dr. Klement has you lie on an exam table. He then injects a local anesthetic into the treatment area to reduce discomfort before the procedure.

Using guided imagery, Dr. Klement injects the medication into the affected joint. After your joint injection, Dr. Klement sends you to the recovery area and then sends you home.

What can I expect after joint injections?

You may experience some soreness at the site of your joint injection, but you should notice relief from your pain within 2 to 7 days after your procedure. Results may last several months, and Dr. Klement may repeat your joint injections as needed.
